GAMES 

• Side-out scoring- Points are only scored by the serving team.

• 5 team pools—Games are to 11, with a Cap of 13. Teams switch sides every 4 points.

• 4 Team pools- Games are to 15, Cap at 17 teams will switch sides every 5 points.

This is subject to change.

After pool play ends

1st place team in ALL pools is required to ensure that the top sheet is completely filled out. Point differentials AND note 1st and 2nd place teams. A "play in" game will be held if there are any ties after pool play. Play in games will be one game to 7, 7 is the cap.

WARM-UPS

• The warm-up before each game should not exceed 5 minutes. Ref teams should ensure that warm-ups are less than 5 minutes. (You know who you are...)

Serve/serve receive ​

• You cannot open your hand to pass a serve. However, a serve may be received with an open-hand action IF the ball is only contacted by the hand's palm or other hard surface. No fingers may be used while in serve receive. The ball must "pop" off the receiving surface and may not come to rest in any fashion.  

• If using two hands, Hands must be touching or together when receiving the serve. 

• The service toss may be dropped anywhere with no fault once per point. A subsequent drop of the service tosses results in a loss of serve. 

• A team determined to be out of serving order will lose their serve

• Let serves are not permitted. (Serve cannot touch the net)

• The courtesy rule is in effect for the coed BB & B levels and means the male may serve the female once every serving rotation and not on the game point.  

• What does it mean to "serve the female"?  It means that 1/3 of the court is considered the female players' "side" of the court.  If a player serves seam (between the two opponents) and the female passes the ball, this is NOT a violation.  If there is any dispute, the ref team will determine the call.

 

pursuit​

• A player may not chase the ball into another court; it is out of bounds.

Blocking 

• ​A block does not count as a touch

• directional blocking is not permitted;

• NO open hand tips/dinks are allowed.

substitutions 

• Substitutions are not permitted in doubles or quads​

• Doubles- In the case of an injured player, you may have someone "fill in" to complete pool play, but you will not make playoffs. The player must be level-appropriate and approved by all teams on the net

• Quads - you may continue with the remaining players

MISC 

• At no time may a player touch the net or poles;  Poles are considered antennas to determine whether a ball crossed over the net within the playing area. 

• Any equipment issues with the net or court (lines) result in an immediate re-do of the point. 

• A player may not purposely cause such an issue. This is to be determined only by the ref.

• If you touch the net after the ball is down, and it's part of your follow-through, it's a net violation. 

• Net calls- hair and clothing are permissible.  

• Hats and shoes are NOT permitted to touch the net.

• A player may cross into the opponent's space during play if there is no interference with play and no net violation. 

• This is at the ref's discretion.

• Players may open-hand pass an offensive hit only if the ball is hit on a continuous downward path (commonly referred to as "hard-driven"). If the offensive-driven ball arcs at all and you use your open hands to pass it, it is a violation.

• Substitutions—There is no subbing during tournaments. If your partner gets injured during the tournament and you have someone willing to fill in, you may finish pool play, but you are ineligible to make the play-offs.

• You may not open hand set over the net. If a player hand sets, both hands must contact the ball simultaneously. The ball cannot rotate more than 1 1/2 times. It is a violation if the wind blows the hand set over the net.

•  *Only in the Open Division may players set the ball over the net

• A player may enter the opponent's space, court, or free zone, provided that the player does not contact the net and it does not interfere with the opponent's play. *at the ref's discretion

• Ref team makes final decision on any and all calls.  Please be respectful to one another at all times.

• Each team is permitted one time out per set.  Limited to one minute

• Any injury or medical time out can take place whenever needed.

• Sandbagging - “hiding the strength, skill or difficulty of something or someone early in an engagement”.  

• We have determined it is necessary to state the following rules: If you have won or come in second in one division twice, you should move to the next level unless you are currently playing the highest level.

• Please sign up for the division of the highest-level partner.

  • If you usually play A, but your partner has won the A division twice, please sign up for AA.

  • If you usually play BB and your partner typically plays in the A division, please sign up for A

  • If you play A and your partner typically plays AA, please sign up for AA.

• Staff may request that you move divisions after registration.

• MISCONDUCT by a team member toward officials, opponents, teammates, or spectators is classified into four categories according to the degree of the offense. 

  • CATEGORIES

    • a) Unsportsmanlike conduct: argumentation, intimidation, etc.

    • b) Rude conduct: acting contrary to good manners or moral principles, expressing contempt

    • c) Offensive conduct: defamatory or insulting words or gestures

    • d) Aggression: physical attack or intended aggression 

• The player will be disqualified from the competition.
